- Trump Administration Creates ‘AI Litigation Working Group’ to Eliminate AI Regulations
- The task force will seek to review and overturn laws implemented by the state.
- Trump maintains that winning the AI race is vital to national security
Experts have warned that AI is evolving much faster than any regulation can control, and that the weak safety laws we have are inadequate to protect users and society at large.
But even those flimsy protections may be overturned in the US, as the Trump administration’s new plans include a new executive order giving the federal government unbridled power over states, creating an “AI Litigation Task Force” that would seek to challenge state AI laws.
The draft document states that the task force would seek to remove all barriers and regulatory frameworks for American leadership in AI, emphasizing the importance of the United States leading the global technological revolution; “Our national security demands that we win this race.”
‘Cumbersome regulations’
A particular target of the task force will be California’s new AI safety laws, which the draft order calls “complex and onerous,” claiming the bill is based on the “purely speculative suspicion that AI could “pose a significant catastrophic risk.””
The legislation also notifies states that there are likely to be funding restrictions for those that have implemented AI laws that the administration deems burdensome, or that require AI models to “alter their truthful results, or that could compel AI developers or implementers to disclose or report information in a way that would violate the First Amendment.”
It is important to note the timing of this order. The AI bubble is widely expected to burst at any moment, which in turn means that many tech (and other) companies that have gone “all in” on AI are now, it seems, in danger of imminent collapse – and indeed, the entire global economy appears to be circling the drain waiting for the first domino to fall.
So by removing barriers and regulations, the Trump administration will most likely seek to soften this blow by putting users and consumers at risk through deregulated and unfettered AI with less transparency or accountability to protect the public.
