We were very happy and more than a little surprised when Google announced that it had gotten AirDrop working on the Pixel 10 phones, without Apple’s help, but it seems like the new feature isn’t working as well as it should for some users.
According to reports compiled by PiunikaWeb (via Android Central), the update is causing notable Wi-Fi connectivity issues. Apparently, as soon as you open the Quick Share menu on Android, the Wi-Fi turns off and the device cannot see any networks.
You can see some of the complaints yourself on the Pixel Phone support forums and on Reddit. While some users have chimed in to say they’re having the same problem, it doesn’t seem to be affecting that many people.
So far there has been no response from Google, and the official bug report has also not been fixed at the time of writing. It is also unclear whether this affects a particular type of Android device or a particular version of Android.
Possible solutions
According to Android Central, there are a couple of solutions you can try if you’ve been affected by the issue. First, you can completely remove the Quick Share extension through Settings: tap Applications so See all applicationsthen select the extension and choose Uninstall updates.
Second, you can turn off Wi-Fi before using Quick Share and turn it back on afterward. It’s not really an ideal solution, but at least it will allow you to share something from your device (albeit via Bluetooth instead of Wi-Fi).
It’s not certain that the new AirDrop support is causing this, but it’s likely. Google has clearly done some clever engineering behind the scenes, and existing Android software and hardware may struggle to keep up.
So far there has been no comment from Apple on all this, although it is unlikely that it will be happy with the trick. There are some good reasons why it won’t block Android’s new connectivity, especially if it starts to expand to more phones and tablets.
