It looks like we’ll soon have a successor to the DJI Osmo Pocket 3, which we described as “class-leading” in our review, now that a new DJI vlogging camera has landed at the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the US.
Any device that wants to go on sale in the United States must first get FCC approval, and as New Camera discovered (via Notebookcheck), that’s already happened. It means the DJI Osmo Pocket 4 could go on sale at virtually any time.
The FCC documentation doesn’t tell us much interesting about the camera (it confirms that it will support Wi-Fi 5, for example, like the DJI Osmo Pocket 3), but apparently there will be an upgrade to the battery capacity: from 1300 mAh to 1545 mAh.
We’ll have to wait and see how much difference that makes to actual battery life when we get our hands on the DJI Osmo Pocket 4. Extra battery capacity is always welcome, of course, but it’s just one of the factors that contribute to battery life.
A ban is coming in the US.
We’ve previously seen leaked images of the DJI Osmo Pocket 4, showing a substantial redesign. That redesign could include a second screen, apparently, which would also have an impact on the average time between battery charges.
In addition to a second screen, the upcoming gimbal device is rumored to also have a second camera. In theory, that would lead to higher quality photos and videos, and also a wider range of shooting options.
This is all happening under the threat of a ban on new DJI products in the US, which looks increasingly likely to happen on Tuesday, December 23. A security audit by a government agency is required before then for DJI to escape the ban.
DJI will want to release the Osmo Pocket 4 before December 23 and the start of the ban, although it’s unclear at the moment what powers the US government might have to retroactively ban products released before that date.
