YouTube is getting in on the Spotify Wrapped action with its own annual overview, showing your viewing history over the past year and highlighting the channels you watched most frequently and the topics you were most interested in.
Summaries are rolling out now and are presented in the familiar story-style format you’ll see on social media. There are up to 12 different cards to access, covering everything from your “personality type” based on what you watch, to how your viewing evolved over the year.
You can find the summary within the YouTube app on your phone by opening the You tab: if your summary is available, you’ll see a banner announcing it at the top. You can also check it out in a browser by going to www.youtube.com/recap.
If you’ve listened to at least 10 hours of music on YouTube during the year, you’ll also receive some music summaries. These summaries are not available in all regions or countries, YouTube says, and will not appear for supervised or child accounts.
An interesting review of the year.
I’ve already had a chance to try out YouTube’s Summary feature, and it’s an interesting summary of the past year, although don’t expect too much detailed information (and the usual “AI can make mistakes” disclaimer is included).
It was fun to see how many channels I had watched and which ones were the best, even if they were exactly what I would have guessed. I also liked how her viewing history compares to the YouTube average: I’m apparently in the top 0.7% of listeners to Lofi Girl videos, which I watch often while working.
If YouTube is looking for suggestions for the next year, some more detailed findings would be welcome – like how my viewing habits tend to change throughout the day, for example, or examples of some really dark videos I’ve watched in the last 12 months.
Still, it’s a solid start for YouTube Recap, which will be available on your account through the end of the year and is a more personalized version of YouTube Rewind, the annual video series that ran from 2010 to 2019.
