- Second test: December 4-8, daily start time: 4am GMT / 2pm AEST / 11pm ET (previous day)
Before this series began, the second Ashes Test in Brisbane looked to be England’s toughest challenge of the five matches. It is a day and night Test, played with a pink ball on a ground where England have the lowest winning percentage among Australia’s current Test venues.
Although Australia lost its only previous pink-ball Test in Brisbane, against the West Indies in 2023, it has won its other 13. England, by contrast, is less familiar with and less successful in the format: it has played seven pink-ball Tests and lost five. Two of England’s probable XI, Gus Atkinson and Jamie Smith, have never even played first-class cricket with a pink ball.
Batting in pink-ball Tests becomes more complicated as the floodlights come on and twilight descends. This is when the most dramatic cricket usually occurs. The evening session will begin at 2pm in Brisbane and will air in prime time in Australia and on UK screens from 9am
The first part of each day is usually the easiest time to hit. Joe Root, who has played in all of England’s pink-ball Tests, says of this period: “It can be quite placid and you can feel out of touch with the ball. With the bat, it’s about recognizing those moments and making the most of them by knowing when to put your foot down and maximizing good batting conditions.”
England’s Bazballers don’t need an excuse to attack, but this represents an excellent opportunity. They will surely be wary of facing Mitchell Starc, the world’s most successful bowler with the pink ball, in the spotlight. Another potentially dramatic Test match looms as we head to The Gabba.
