The winners of the International Landscape Photographer of the Year 2025 competition were announced this week and the cameras used by the winning participants are now known.
Take the overall winning photo, a prehistoric-looking scene of a snowy mountain, which can be found in New Plymouth, North Island, New Zealand, and was taken by Austrian photographer Lukas Trixl.
Lukas took the stunning image with the Canon EOS R5 mirrorless camera, which he pairs with the Canon RF 14-35mm F4 IS USM, Laowa 12mm Zero-D f2.8, Canon EF 70-200mm F2.8 and Canon RF 200-800mm lenses, having upgraded from the Canon Rebel T7 DSLR (known as the EOS 2000D outside the US) years ago.
This news comes in the wake of the 2025 Wildlife Photographer of the Year awards, which were also dominated by the EOS R5, although the overall winner of that contest used an 11-year-old DSLR, the Nikon D810.
The other top prize at ILPOTY 2025 was the overall winning portfolio of J. Fritz Rumpf, who used the Nikon D850 DSLR, the mirrorless Nikon Z7 II, and the DJI Mavic 3 drone for his wide selection of landscape photography.
So there’s a theme connecting these contest winners: Don’t discount older pro gear. The EOS R5 is still a great camera, despite being five years old and having been replaced by the EOS R5 Mark II, and the aforementioned DSLRs are even older.
And there’s good news if you have your sights set on these types of competitions but need top-notch equipment to help make your vision a reality: You don’t need to spend a lot. For example, the Canon EOS R5 has dropped to record prices following the Black Friday sales and given that it is now an older model.

Released in July 2020, the Canon EOS R5 remains a popular camera among professionals more than five years later, certainly considering the top photography competitions of 2025. The EOS R5 has dropped in price by around 35% since its launch, making it a great buy today.
