One more incident, highlighting the persistent dangers of Karachi’s sewers, occurred in Manghopir, where a five-year-old girl narrowly escaped death after falling into a sewage pit in front of a private school.
According to police, the incident occurred near Garam Chashma in Union Committee No. 2, where Inayah Amin, a first-grade student, slipped in the gutter while returning home with her classmates after school. Other children raised the alarm, prompting a passerby to rescue her in time. Fortunately, the sewer was four to five feet deep and there was little residual water.
The boy’s parents rushed to the school after learning about the incident. The police also immediately rushed to the spot. SHO Manghopir Zubair Nawaz confirmed that “several manholes have been discovered in the area”, adding that the girl was saved only due to the timely action of a passer-by.
Municipal president Nawaz Brohi was also called to the spot. He said the manhole covers had been delivered to the UC president, but asked why they had not been installed.
A day ago, three-year-old Amara fell into an open sewer in Sector 12-D of Baldia Town. However, local residents came to the scene and managed to get her out. The girl suffered minor injuries.
According to people in the area, although the viral footage prompted civic officials to plug the manhole involved in the incident, several others in the neighborhood still remain uncovered.
Even the tragedy in which a small child lost his life by falling into an exposed NIPA manhole failed to shake the civic authorities out of their apathy as no steps have been taken to prevent such fatal incidents.
