Karl Bushby’s Goliath Expedition: The Journey of the Man Who Walked 27 Years to Get Home

British adventurer Karl Bushby will complete his 27-year walk around the world in September 2026. He has traveled through 25 countries, traversing the harshest conditions, hot deserts, jungles, frozen seas, war zones and various political obstacles.

Beginning in November 1998, at the age of 29, the former British paratrooper left the tip of South America to travel the world on foot without using motorized assistance, a journey now known as the “Goliath Expedition.”

Now, the 56-year-old will return home after spending nearly three decades traveling. With almost minimal social media presence and no official website, Bushby has become extremely difficult to track down.

Starting from the tip of South America, he has trekked across the United States, Canada, Russia, China and Europe, and now he is finally ready to return home to Britain. It is just 1,000 miles away from the final leg to complete its 58,000 kilometer journey.

He spent 57 days detained in Russia for entering from an unofficial border.

Some of the interesting features of your trip are:

  • When he started there were no smartphones or social media.
  • Google maps were not invented at that time.
  • Bill Clinton was president of the United States and Tony Blair was prime minister of the United Kingdom.

The adventure was supposed to last only 12 years, but it took him almost 28 years to complete his expedition.

The delay was due to several political obstacles, including a five-year ban on Russian visas in 2013 (later revoked) and financial constraints.

The COVID-19 pandemic also contributed significantly to the extension of the expedition.
