there is no we were liars season 2 release date yet, but we know that the show was officially renewed on September 17, 2025 with an Instagram post revealing that it’s “coming soon.”
In a statement via The Hollywood Reporter, show co-creators Julie Plec and Carina Adly MacKenzie said: “We loved making the show with so many spectacular human beings. The fan response was truly special. There are still many secrets buried on Beechwood Island and we can’t wait to continue unearthing them.”
Season 1 came out in June 2025, a year after filming began. So if I had to predict a release date for season 2, I would say it will be late 2026 or early 2027 at the earliest.

We Were Liars season 2 plot details and rumors
Full spoilers follow we were liars season 1. Possible spoilers for we were liars season 2.
While we were liars Season 1 followed E Lockhart’s novel of the same name, season 2 will follow his second book, titled family of liars – with a little twist.
Speaking to Deadline, Lockhart joked: “We have season 2 planned for we were liarsand showrunners, Julie Plec and Carina Adley Mackenzie, are taking the story that’s in family of liarsmy second book, but they’re also adding all kinds of fun new twists and turns.
“They have a lot of ideas up their sleeve, so people who know family of liars They will be able to see everything they want to see, but they will also be surprised. “I think it’s going to be a lot of fun.”
Without giving too much away, since you can read the book if In fact I want to know what we were liars season 2 will be discussed, but family of liars is a prequel story alluded to in the season 1 finale.
The book tells of a summer in which the Sinclair sisters found themselves involved in their own mystery on Beechwood Island, when they were teenagers.
As Deadline explains: “The plan is to weave that material into the stories of the younger generation and also cast younger versions of the three Sinclair sisters.”
And there’s a direct reference to this in the season 1 finale when Carrie and Bess discuss whether an incident in their past, during Summer 16, was the reason for everything terrible that happened to them now in their present. But details about what they actually did that faithful summer have been kept under wraps.
There’s also the fact that at the end of the finale, while Johnny was supposed to have seemingly passed away from the world along with the other Liars, that’s actually not the case.
Instead, Carrie sees her son for the first time in the kitchen and talks to him. But why he hasn’t died is a mystery for season 2.
Whether the same can be assumed for Gat and Mirren’s souls is unclear at this time. But Maheshwari, who played Gat in season 1, told Us that he would be open to returning, if there’s an opportunity for him: “If that happens, I’m very willing. I’m very ready for it, but I don’t really know. It’s hard to say. I’m sure they have ideas. I’m not very aware of what they’re thinking.”
Will there be more seasons of We Were Liars?
family of liars It is not the last book of the we were liars family, and that’s because in November 2025, Lockhart’s third novel, We fall apartwas published.
And when speaking with Deadline, Lockhart revealed that while We fall apart It is an independent story, there are nods to the world (and two seasons). So when it comes to developing this for a third season, Lockhart says, “All I can really say is that my showrunners have the first copies of this book and we’ll see what they want to cook up.”
But it’s currently unclear what this means for a possible season 3. As Variety explains, We fall apart “It follows a new set of characters who have their own secrets to keep and mysteries to solve.”
This includes Matilda, who is invited to spend the summer at Hidden Beach with her long-lost father: a reclusive artist named Kingsley Cello. But, when he gets there, his father is nowhere to be seen and instead he meets his half-brother Meer, a former child star named Brock, and a brooding boy named Tatum who lives in the house by the sea.
Again, Lockhart explains how, while it is a separate book, it still has ties to the we were liars universe: “The first thing I want to say is that it can be read on its own, but for people who have read “We Were Liars,” I think what you’re going to like most that starts near the beginning of the book is the characters invading Beechwood Island.”
Whether this will be picked up as a spin-off, as a season 3 or not, we will have to wait and see.
