Authorities are planning immediate measures to improve energy access in Gwadar and GB as part of broader energy sector reforms.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday approved electricity projects for Gwadar and Gilgit-Baltistan while chairing a meeting on the ongoing power sector reforms.
The Prime Minister authorized the immediate implementation of a comprehensive plan to address electricity supply problems in the port city of Gwadar. He said uninterrupted power supply would support national economic activity and investment, adding that upgrading of facilities would help Gwadar port become a major hub for future economic activity.
Sharif also ordered that work be started immediately on a 100 MW solar project in Gilgit-Baltistan to ensure stable supply of clean electricity. He said the region’s well-being and economic development remained among the federal government’s top priorities and steps were being taken to promote industrial activity, investment and broader economic development there.
The prime minister lauded the recommendations of the committee headed by Federal Minister Ahsan Iqbal and the Ministry of Power to resolve the electricity issues, and directed the ministry to ensure effective implementation of the comprehensive strategy encompassing immediate, short-term and long-term measures.
Officials informed the meeting that steps are being taken to ensure electricity supply to domestic and commercial consumers in Gwadar. The meeting was further informed that the government will provide land, communication, infrastructure and other necessary facilities for power projects in Gilgit-Baltistan within the specified time frame.
