- Say hello to the new IKEA Gömpyssling light and sensor
- It is a simple, independent device that runs on batteries.
- This affordable lamp is now available in European markets
Fresh from launching some colorful new speakers and lamps, IKEA has further expanded its range of smart home devices with the Gömpyssling light and sensor – an LED light that turns on automatically when motion is detected.
It couldn’t be much simpler and it couldn’t be much cheaper either. According to Notebookcheck, you can now pick up a two-pack for £3 in the UK and €4 in several EU countries, including France and Germany.
It is not yet known whether or not these little lights will reach other countries. In fact, IKEA hasn’t said much about them: the Swedish furniture maker seems to have launched this new lamp without much fanfare (nor an official press release).
We have the official product list, which gives us more details about the light. It offers warm white lighting (2700 Kelvin), is housed in 50% recycled plastic, and has a diameter of 7 cm (2.8 inches) and a depth of 19 mm (0.7 inches).
No hubs or apps needed
The motion activated light stays on for 10 seconds after the last movement is detected and comes with a gel pad to attach it to surfaces. It does not come with batteries, which are sold separately; Only one AA battery is needed for each light.
This is a product clearly designed to be placed inside cabinets and display cases: as IKEA explains, “the light is directed downwards at an angle to illuminate the inside of the furniture”, so there is no need to walk around in the dark.
While it’s debatable whether or not Gömpyssling’s light and sensor qualifies as a smart home product, because it’s so simple, there’s some appeal to devices that don’t need to be connected to Wi-Fi or operated via a phone app.
IKEA certainly seems to have renewed interest in devices like this. Just before the speakers and lamps we mentioned at the beginning, the company also released a bunch of affordable lights and sensors to equip your living space.
