ISLAMABAD:
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Wednesday dismissed Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfaraz Bugti’s plea to postpone the Local Government (LG) elections in Quetta, stating that the elections will be held on December 28, according to the schedule released on November 3.
In its written order, the commission reaffirmed that the Quetta local body elections will proceed as scheduled, noting that printing of ballot papers is already underway.
The order directed the Balochistan government and security agencies to provide full cooperation and ensure foolproof arrangements to safeguard voters, candidates, polling staff and public for smooth conduct of elections.
In a dissenting note, Election Commission member Shah Muhammad Jatoi agreed with the majority on technical objections but warned that Quetta’s severe winter and migration of residents could dampen voter turnout.
It further highlighted security concerns in parts of Balochistan and recommended postponing elections until conditions improve.
The prime minister, in an appeal, urged the commission to modify or suspend the electoral calendar, citing adverse weather conditions, security concerns, administrative preparedness and problems with electoral district boundaries and voter lists. The Commission had earlier rejected similar petitions by the Chief Minister on November 3 and the Governor of Balochistan on November 26.
