The University of Michigan fired Sherrone Moore after the school found “credible evidence” of an inappropriate relationship with a staff member; Hours later, he was booked into jail.
It’s a pretty quick fall from grace for Moore, who less than two years ago was on top of the college football world as a national champion.
Moore was embroiled in controversy during the investigation into possible sign theft in Michigan, but this controversy trumps them all.
Here’s a look at how Moore got to where he is today.

game days
Moore is a former college football player, who stood 6 feet 5 inches and weighed over 300 pounds during his college days. After spending his first two years at a community college near his hometown, he transferred to Oklahoma and played there for two years.
Moore played in 14 games with the Sooners, winning the Big 12 Championship both seasons. In 2007, they defeated top-ranked Missouri in the Big 12 title game, but the Sooners lost the Fiesta Bowl both seasons.

First coaching job, promotion through the ranks
Just one year after graduating from Oklahoma, Moore joined Louisville’s coaching staff as a graduate assistant. He was promoted to full-time assistant in 2012, becoming the team’s tight ends coach.
Moore left to take the same position at Central Michigan in 2014 before also becoming the team’s assistant head coach and recruiting coordinator in 2017. In 2018, he landed in Ann Arbor to become the Wolverines’ tight ends coach.

University of Michigan
Moore was the tight ends coach until 2020 and was promoted in early 2021 to the team’s co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. Michigan was named the top offensive line in both 2021 and 2022, and with Jim Harbaugh running the show, the Wolverines were once again a powerhouse, making the College Football Playoffs in both seasons for the first time.
Moore’s first experience as a head coach came in 2023, when he became the interim head coach while Harbaugh served two separate three-game suspensions stemming from the sign-stealing scandal. Michigan completed a perfect season, winning the national championship over Washington.
After Harbaugh left for the Los Angeles Chargers, Moore was promoted to head coach. Their first season was a disappointment as Michigan went 8-5, but one of those wins was a big upset as a three-touchdown underdog in Columbus against Ohio State.

Moore served a two-game suspension this season while the investigation into the sign-stealing scandal continued, and despite going 9-3 in the regular season, the school’s winning streak against Ohio State ended and the Wolverines missed the playoffs.
Dismissal, arrest
Moore was surprisingly fired Thursday, and the University of Michigan quickly announced that it had found credible evidence of an inappropriate relationship with an employee. Shortly after, he was booked into the Washtenaw County Jail in Michigan.
Pittsfield police said they responded to a home as part of an assault investigation. Police said a suspect was detained and the incident does not appear to be random. Police said the suspect was lodged in the Washtenaw County Jail pending review of charges by the Washtenaw County Prosecutor.
Police said the investigation was ongoing. At the time of this publication, Moore had not yet been charged.
Moore married in 2015 and he and his wife have three daughters.

Francis Xavier “Biff” Poggi was named interim head coach and will be on the sidelines when Michigan faces Texas in the Citrus Bowl on December 31. Earlier this season, Poggi replaced Moore during his suspension.
