Traffic is restored on KKH after the protest ends

A sit-in protest against the power crisis in Aliabad area of Hunza district came to an end on Wednesday when the Karakoram Highway was restored to traffic as the government accepted the demands of locals. Protests broke out in several parts of Gilgit-Baltistan on Friday as residents reported up to 22 hours of power cuts daily amid harsh winter conditions and snowfall.

The sit-in in Aliabad area, headquarters of Hunza district, caused difficulties for locals and commuters as heavy traffic remained suspended and an alternative route was opened for light traffic. Vehicles loaded with goods imported from China through Khunjerab Pass were also stranded at the protest site. A statement issued by Britain’s government spokesman said the federal government accepted all 14 of the protesters’ demands.
