Iranian authorities once again arrested Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi during a ceremony honoring the late Iranian lawyer Khosrow Alikordi on Friday, December 12, 2025.
Mashhad’s lawyer was found dead under questionable circumstances and officials described the death as caused by a heart attack.
The Narges Foundation issued a statement calling for the immediate release of the 53-year-old activist.
Their statement read: “The Narges Foundation calls for the immediate and unconditional release of all detainees who were attending a memorial ceremony to pay their respects and demonstrate solidarity.”
They added that the violent repression of the ceremony by security and police forces constitutes a serious violation of fundamental freedoms.
The human rights activist was serving a sentence of 13 years and nine months in prison for accusations of propaganda against the State, her government and supporting nationwide protests in which women defied mandatory orders to wear the hijab.
He was given a three-week leave due to his medical condition; However, his time out of prison was extended amid external pressures.
The activist is a heart patient who suffered multiple heart attacks while incarcerated before undergoing surgery in 2022, her supporters said.
It is not yet clear whether authorities will send Narges back to prison to complete his remaining sentence or whether he will face a new trial.
