GILGIT:
Gilgit-Baltistan Inspector General of Police (IGP) Afzal Mahmood Butt has announced a major breakthrough in the investigation into the attack on Ahl-e-Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ) leader Qazi Nisar Ahmad.
In a press conference, IGP Butt confirmed that major arrests have been made in connection with the incident on October 5, which resulted in six people being injured, including Sunni cleric Qazi Nisar himself.
The IGP revealed that the police successfully identified and arrested the persons directly involved in the attack as well as those who facilitated it at various stages.
Two key perpetrators involved in the physical assault have been arrested, one of them identified as Naeem Abbas, son of Sultan Ali, whom the IGP named as the mastermind behind the attack.
The two main suspects arrested are reported to be from the Rondu area of Skardu. According to the IGP, the authorities already know the complete list of names of all the people involved in the attack.
A total of nine people traveling in two different vehicles participated in the terrorist operation: five in one car and four in the other. The police also arrested the central facilitator, who is believed to be from Jalalabad, Gilgit.
