Pakistan and Australia to boost trade, cooperation and collective action against terrorism

Newly appointed Australian High Commissioner Tim Kane met Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on December 19, 2025. The meeting was also attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar and Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Tariq Fatemi.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated the High Commissioner on his appointment and expressed confidence that his tenure would strengthen the long-standing relations between Pakistan and Australia.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed grief over the loss of innocent lives in the terrorist shooting at Bondi Beach, Sydney on December 14, 2025, and stated that Pakistan unequivocally condemns the attack. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s solidarity with Australia during this period of pain, saying terrorism has no religion and must be condemned in all its forms. He also emphasized the need for collective action to eliminate the threat of terrorism.

Welcoming the positive trajectory of relations between Pakistan and Australia, Prime Minister Shehbaz emphasized the need to expand bilateral trade and investment and expressed the desire to enhance cooperation in the agriculture and livestock sectors. He highlighted Australian interest in the mining and minerals sector and cited Reko Diq as an example of potential opportunities in Pakistan.

Prime Minister Shehbaz highlighted the importance of the strong cultural and bilateral ties between Pakistan and Australia, particularly their shared passion for cricket.

During the meeting, the Prime Minister extended his best wishes to Australian leaders and said he looked forward to further strengthening ties between the two countries.
