No talks as govt moves forward after PTI committee exits

ISLAMABAD:

The government has swung into action to contain the parliamentary fallout from the mass resignations of PTI senators from Senate standing committees, activating a contingency plan to keep legislative oversight functioning, it emerged on Friday.

The government also decided not to reopen negotiations with opposition lawmakers who resigned earlier this year.

The resignations, carried out on instructions from PTI founder Imran Khan, who remains jailed, left several committees without members and without chairmen. PTI senators resigned from all their respective standing committees in protest against the arrest of the former prime minister and the “disintegration of democratic norms” following the disqualification of PTI legislators.

In this context, the government has started implementing “Plan B”, which involves a set of procedural measures to ensure that the work of the committee continues despite the absence of PTI members.
