Traffic police collect Rs 4.46 crore challans in Gujranwala

Fines almost triple compared to the previous year; Stricter enforcement leads to decreased traffic accidents

GUJRANWALA:

The city’s Traffic Police reported issuing over 750,000 challans for traffic violations and collecting over Rs 4.46 crore in fines during 2025, officials said on Tuesday.

Officials attributed a sharp decline in traffic accidents to stricter implementation of traffic laws throughout the city.

According to official data, the city Traffic Police, under the supervision of Chief Traffic Officer (CTO), Ayesha Butt, has intensified surveillance in the city center and areas within the ring road limits.

Special attention was paid to helmet use, seat belt compliance, tinted windows, non-standard or missing license plates, unregistered vehicles, unlicensed driving, underage driving and other violations.

Apart from issuing challans, cases were registered against hundreds of vehicle owners for serious violations of traffic rules.

Authorities said that during 2025, the traffic police issued a total of 168,470 driving licenses, most of them for motorcyclists.

There are an estimated 100,000 motorcycles on the road in Gujranwala and the CTO office launched a targeted drive to ensure that motorcyclists get valid licences.

The enforcement campaign resulted in more than 750,000 traffic violations recorded during the year.

These included 8,808 cases of one-way violations, 19,996 violations recorded during smog-related restrictions and 63,090 challans for not wearing helmets.

Thousands of motorists were also fined for driving without a licence, using black tinted papers on vehicle windows, driving on one wheel and parking illegally.

Officials said fines collected during the year exceeded 4.46 billion rupees, almost three times more than the previous year, reflecting both increased law enforcement and stricter penalties.

Under the revised regulations, minimum fines were raised to Rs 2,000, drawing criticism from sections of the public.
