NFL games on Christmas Day are a relatively new thing.
The NFL has typically owned Thanksgiving Day, in addition to games played on Sundays and Mondays.
This year, the NFL partnered with Netflix to show two games during the day and one game on Amazon Prime Video at night. The games face the NBA, which for several years has owned the Christmas parties on television.

The NFL’s invasion of the NBA is something that seemed to irritate basketball Hall of Famer Charles Barkley.
“The NFL got greedy and started adding Christmas games. We used to have this day to ourselves, but Roger Goodell and those NFL pigs always want to hog every day of the week,” Barkley said on ESPN as the NBA schedule began. “Christmas is an NBA day.”
Barkley criticized the NFL in January 2024 for having a Peacock-exclusive game during the playoffs.

He said at the time that showing a playoff game via streaming was “low class.”
“That’s not right. They’re just being greedy pigs,” he said on ESPN Radio at the time. “I’m glad some NFL players are attacking them… I know the NFL is the biggest thing in the world, but putting this game on Peacock and making people have to buy Peacock is just low class. I’m disgusted.”

The NFL’s dominance of the sports conversation will only grow if the league and players agree to an 18th regular-season game, a notion that has been floating around in recent years with the possibility of the Super Bowl being moved to Presidents’ Day.
