Hyderabad police step up security for New Year celebrations

Strict action against aerial shooting and street stunts is planned as more than 1,200 police officers are deployed across the city.

HYDERABAD:

Hyderabad authorities have finalized comprehensive security measures ahead of the New Year celebrations to prevent incidents of aerial firing, street fights and reckless motorcycle stunts. More than 1,200 police officers have been deployed across the city, focusing on key intersections and main streets, while physical barriers such as razor wire will protect critical areas.

SSP Hyderabad Adil Hussain Chandio said anyone involved in aerial firing will face charges of attempt to murder under strict legal action. Special surveillance measures, including gates, metal detectors and CCTV cameras, have been put in place at churches, religious sites, shopping malls and sensitive locations.

Hyderabad Region DIG Tariq Razaq Dharejo directed all SSPs to ensure foolproof security, maintain law and order and deploy plainclothes officers to keep an eye on rioters. Citizens have also been urged to celebrate responsibly and avoid illegal activities.

Unlike previous years, authorities have decided not to close markets and shops early, but will cordon off major roads and intersections to avoid chaos. Last year, similar celebrations left nine people injured due to aerial gunfire and fireworks.
