- Samsung shows off 8K RGB micro-LED LCD TV at CES 2025
- It is the continuation of Hisense’s mini-LED RGB LCD TV, the 116UX
- Samsung hopes to launch it in 2025 as its flagship model
At CES 2025, Samsung introduced an 8K LCD TV that uses micro-LED RGB backlighting. The TV has no official name or model number, but Samsung hopes to launch it in 2025.
Just days after Hisense revealed a TV that uses a mini-LED RGB backlight, the 116-inch Hisense UX, which it said will dramatically improve brightness and color accuracy compared to standard mini-LED TVs, Samsung has demonstrated an 8K device with even higher resolution. Advanced RGB micro-LED backlighting.
As FlatpanelsHD reports, the prototype was shown a day before CES at the ‘Samsung First Look’ event. The model shown was a 98-inch 8K set, although Samsung says it could also be available in smaller sizes and has its sights set on a 2025 release date, although this has yet to be officially confirmed.
The 8K RGB micro-LED TV, if launched in 2025, will serve as Samsung’s flagship 8K TV, ranking above the already announced Samsung QN990F (pictured above) and Samsung QN900F, previously revealed at CES as part of the mini -TV 2025 from Samsung. LED line.
Samsung says opting for micro-LEDs instead of mini-LEDs in RGB backlighting will allow for “three times as many LEDs,” which means bolder colors and improved brightness. The even smaller micro-LED backlight will likely also allow for more dimming zones than the mini-LED backlight.
The set is currently a “prototype” as there is no name, model number, price or full list of specifications available, but it is likely to be at the premium end of the market.
Micro-LED for less?
While this 8K RGB micro-LED TV is likely to come with a hefty price tag, it offers an interesting opportunity: access to micro-LED technology for less. Although the price of the TV will likely still be thousands or tens of thousands of dollars, it will be a significant drop on a full micro-LED TV.
Samsung launched a 98-inch 8K model in 2023 (carried over to 2024), the Samsung QN990C, which costs $40,000/£34,999 (about AU$64,545). So the 98-inch RBG micro-LED shown will be more expensive than this and will still be a premium product.
However, this is still lower than the eye-watering prices we see on purely micro-LED TVs, albeit with larger screen sizes. Samsung’s 2022 110-inch micro-LED retails for $149,999 (approximately £121,860 / AU$242,000). LG’s 118-inch MAGNIT micro-LED, which is priced at $237,000 (approximately £129,550 AU$382,436) is something most people would never afford. However, micro-LED was said to be the future of TVs, even surpassing the best OLED TVs. But these prices are simply not feasible for 99% of people.
This new Samsung model won’t have all the benefits of a purely micro-LED TV, like Hisense’s amazing 163-inch micro-LED TV revealed at CES, but using micro-LEDs in the TV’s backlight would still be a improvement over mini-LED backlighting, as micro-LEDs will allow for better black levels, contrast, higher brightness and more vibrant colors. Is the technology likely to remain expensive? Yes, but hopefully it will be significantly less than the current price of a MicroLED TV.
We will eagerly await more details on this RGB micro-LED from Samsung, keeping a close eye on the price. Could this finally be the beginning of integrating micro-LEDs into TVs at a reduced cost? Let’s keep our fingers crossed!
