Leading dash cam manufacturer Garmin has introduced a different type of vehicle camera designed specifically for trucks, and it’s called dēzl DualView.
The system consists of a transmitter and two IPX7-rated exterior cameras that can be mounted on a truck’s rearview mirror or on each side to provide a clear view of remaining blind spots, along with visual alerts when other vehicles enter spots covered by the cameras. Mounting accessories are also supplied.
Getting a full view of the truck’s surroundings should give drivers greater confidence for any maneuvers such as turning, changing lanes and reversing, and is great news for other vehicles, especially motorcycles and cyclists who might otherwise go unnoticed while the truck driver performs such maneuvers.
Look
Naturally, the dēzl DualView can also record trips like any dash cam, offering 1080p video and automatically saving incidents to microSD card storage.
The live stream can be viewed on the driver’s paired tablet or dēzl LGV truck’s satnav. When combined with the latter, drivers can use voice commands to control the camera view, view saved videos, and check incident location, speed, date, and time overlays.
Videos can be viewed and shared via the Garmin Drive mobile app, as long as the user is enrolled in Garmin’s optional Vault plan ($9.99 / £9.99 per month or $99.99 / £99.99 per year).
The road safety device that every truck should have
I have personally sat in the driver’s seat of a truck (during a bicycle safety course) and can attest to the magnitude of blind spots behind the wheel. That knowledge has influenced the way I ride on two wheels around a moving truck.
However, I would be reassured to know that a truck is equipped with a device like the Garmin dēzl DualView, as I’m sure those who drive such vehicles would be too.
Until all vans are equipped with such safety devices, the Garmin dēzl DualView looks like a decent accessory, costing $999.99 / £879.99 at Garmin for the transmitter, two exterior cameras and mounting hardware (Australian prices to be confirmed).
