- A new Lego set concept has been issued
- It’s a model of the original iMac G3 and actually looks very stylish.
- It’s now under review to make it an official set, so cross your fingers if you’re a nostalgic Apple fan.
Have you ever wanted to build your own iMac? That’s a little ambitious for anyone, but what you could be doing in the future is building the first iMac that Apple introduced, even if it’s with Lego bricks.
A new idea for a Lego set has been put forward, and it’s a popular project, recreating the iMac G3, Apple’s first all-in-one computer that emerged in 1998.
It consists of 700 pieces and is currently under review by Lego gurus who will decide if it goes into production.
The idea was submitted through the Lego Ideas portal, where Lego fans can submit their own concept sets and hope they are voted popular, and eventually reviewed and potentially chosen as an official Lego set.
Projects with 10,000 followers are considered for review, and the iMac G3 has amassed that number. If Lego ends up producing and selling a concept, the creator gets 1% of the net sales.
Analysis: solution to iMac nostalgia
This is a very stylish looking Lego set and a faithful replica of the original all-in-one. As the creator points out, the cathode ray tube and plate are present inside, as can be seen through those translucent sides, and the peripherals are also found.
This is great fodder for nostalgia fans, of course, and many people remember this iMac fondly. Not all, of course, as our own Lance Ulanoff recalled not understanding the fuss over the translucent all-in-one at the 25th anniversary of the iMac G3 not long ago.
However, as Lance admits, it was a “commercial and consumer success at the precise time Apple needed it most” (when the company was faltering). It was also Apple’s first ‘i’ product, paving the way for the iPod, iPhone and iPad.
Many great concept sets reach the 10,000 follower mark and are reviewed by Lego, so this idea is still a long way from being realized, but it’s an impressive achievement to even be considered for production.
