Prime Video has presented the first trailer for its next pirate movie The bluff.
Starring Priyanka Chopra Jonas (Citadel) and Karl Urbano (the boys), the R-rated swashbuckling film will premiere on Amazon’s streaming platform on February 25. With just over a month to go until release (at least at the time of writing), then, there’s no better time for its official trailer to be released online.
Look
Set in the mid-19th century, The bluff sees Chopra Jonas play Ercell ‘Bloody Mary’ Bodden, a former sailor who, after escaping her violent past, has settled in the Caribbean with her husband TH (The rings of power‘s Ismael Cruz Cordova), his son Isaac (Vedanten Naidoo) and his sister-in-law Elizabeth (Safia Oakley-Green).
However, when Connor (Urban), the notorious and menacing captain for whom Ercell worked, appears seeking revenge for spoiler-based reasons, Ercell is forced to test her latent violence-based abilities once again to fight for her and her family’s survival. Cue what the PR team at one of the world’s top streaming services has called a “gritsy, adrenaline-fueled action adventure about family, survival, and the indomitable force of a mother’s love.”
Will the Russo brothers finally achieve gold on the streaming service with The Bluff?
While it was not written or directed by Marvel stalwarts Joe and Anthony Russo, The Bluff has been developed alongside Amazon MGM Studios by the couple’s production company AGBO.
Confirmation of the Russo brothers’ involvement might be enough to send a shiver down the spines of some readers. In fact, very little, if any, criticism can be made of the brothers for their critically acclaimed and money-making work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) or their pre-Marvel Studios projects that include beloved comedy shows. Arrested development and Community.
However, there’s no denying that that positivity has been harder to come by for the movies and shows they’ve worked on with leading global streamers like Prime Video, Netflix and Apple TV.
Sure, there have been notable successes. Despite mixed reviews, the Extraction movies and The gray man They have been commercial successes for Netflix. Meanwhile, horror series. Ofa producer of MGM+ projects under the AGBO banner, has been praised by critics despite struggling to break out in the same way as, say, stranger things he did it on Netflix.
However, there have also been notable failures. Cherryan Apple Original Movie and AGBO, Prime Video’s Expensive Spy Series Citadeland Netflix’s abject reinvention of the cult classic graphic novel The Electrical State involved the Russians to varying degrees.
If the Russo Brothers plan to break free from the “they only make good Marvel movies” opinion that follows them everywhere, they need non-comic book projects like The bluff to start having success on a more regular basis. If they do, they might start looting more of that sweet flowing gold. However, if they fail, their productions outside the MCU will continue to sink like a ship with too many cannonball-sized holes in the hull.
