The federal government has decided to introduce new banknote designs, and the move received formal approval from the federal cabinet, which has constituted a cabinet committee to oversee and deliberate on the redesign process.
The decision was taken during a federal cabinet meeting held at the Prime Minister House in Islamabad, chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, where members were briefed by the Finance Ministry about the proposed changes.
The cabinet was informed that the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) is working on new banknote designs in accordance with modern and contemporary requirements, and international experts have been roped in to ensure that the designs meet global standards.
Cabinet members were informed at the briefing that new designs will be introduced for Rs 100, Rs 500, Rs 1,000 and Rs 5,000 notes, marking a significant upgrade to the country’s existing paper currency.
The meeting was told that the new banknotes would feature improved security threads and enhanced security features aimed at reducing counterfeiting and strengthening public confidence in the national currency.
It was further reported that the redesigned banknotes would reflect Pakistan’s regional and geographical diversity, along with notable historical landmarks, giving the currency a stronger national and cultural identity.
In addition to visual and safety improvements, the designs will also incorporate key social themes, including the role of women in national development and the challenges posed by climate change.
The federal cabinet decided to form a committee to carry out further deliberations on the new banknote designs and related matters before their final implementation.
