The situation in the city of Minneapolis erupted after an ICE agent shot a man in the leg who was trying to flee a traffic stop, the Department of Homeland Security says.
The shooting incident occurred in the 600 block of 24th Avenue North, just 12 miles north of where Renee Nicole Good was shot and killed last week.
ICE shooting in Minneapolis: This is what really happened
The Department of Homeland Security said in a statement on X (formerly Twitter) that the officer fired the weapon after “fearing for his life and safety.”
The statement said agents were conducting a traffic stop “on an illegal alien from Venezuela who was released into the country by Joe Biden in 2022.”
DHS detailed the operation that actually caused the incident to turn into a shooting, stating: “In an attempt to evade arrest, the subject fled the scene in his vehicle and crashed into a parked car. He then fled on foot.”
The department stated that after the officer caught up with the man, he “began to resist and violently assault the officer.”
That resulted in an ambush by two other people who appeared from a nearby apartment building and “also attacked the law enforcement officer with a snow shovel and a broom handle.”
The DHS stated that it was a defensive shot by the federal agent and added: “Fearing for his life and safety while being ambushed by three individuals, the officer fired a defensive shot to defend his life. The initial subject was hit in the leg.”
After a man was shot, they fled the scene toward the apartment and locked themselves inside, but were detained by authorities, according to the police. Independent.
Both the detained officer and the Venezuelan are being treated at the hospital, while the other two individuals are detained.
On the other hand, Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara called a protest that broke out in response to tonight’s shooting illegal and called on protesters to disperse immediately.
The city’s police chief said: “It’s over the line and people need to leave,” adding: “This is already a very tense situation, we don’t need this to get any worse.”
After the incident, there have been more than 2,000 federal agents deployed in the city, according to reports NBC News.
The outlet also reported that, since the news broke, the situation has worsened in the city.
DHS says the Minnesota operation is its largest to date, with more than 2,400 people arrested since it began on Nov. 29, 2025.
