Google’s Gemini AI is slowly replacing Google Assistant in Android Auto, but for those users still waiting to be switched over, an increasing number of features are failing, and people aren’t happy about it.
As noted by 9to5Google, there are several reports on Reddit that Google Assistant is refusing to perform tasks or give answers that it previously had no problem with. An example given is that the assistant does not understand navigation instructions spoken out loud.
It’s one thing to keep waiting for the Gemini update to hit your Android Auto dashboard; It’s another to discover that basic Android Auto functions now don’t work because Google Assistant is becoming less and less capable.
“I didn’t understand that” is apparently now a common Google Assistant refrain whenever voice commands are attempted, and one user had to go back to their car’s built-in navigation just to find the correct route from A to B every time.

There are many responses to the original post: one mentions asking Google Assistant to play some songs on Spotify, only to receive silence. It seems like third party integrations are constantly breaking as well.
Another comment complains about not being able to answer phone calls through Android Auto, which seems to be a recurring theme in the thread. These are fairly basic functions that the Google Assistant has been handling without problems for years.
“It’s gotten noticeably worse lately,” writes one Redditor, who hasn’t been able to find places like gas stations near his current location using Google Assistant. Worse yet, these features still work fine in the Google Maps app without Android Auto.
The only light at the end of the tunnel for these frustrated users is that the Gemini update should arrive soon, although Google has not given a fixed date. After that, AI voice interactions in Android Auto should be much more natural and useful.
