- X remains blocked in Venezuela, despite claims the ban has been lifted

- Venezuelan digital rights group confirms that “there will be no significant changes” in 2026
It is still necessary to use a VPN to access X in Venezuela, despite rumors suggesting that the ban on the platform had been lifted following the capture of President Nicolás Maduro.
Venezuelan digital rights group Ve Sin Filtro denied the rumors on Wednesday, stating: “The social network
The organization added that most citizens can only access the platform by using a virtual private network (VPN) or similar software.
The rumor may have been sparked by the recent return of Venezuelan government accounts to the platform. However, the director of Ve Sin Filtro, Andrés Azpurúa, said that X “remains blocked on the main ISPs, including the state-owned CANTV.”
Increase in VPN usage despite restrictions
The digital rights organization confirms that there have been “no significant changes” to internet censorship since its last monitoring report published in November last year.
The report shows that state control of the Internet in Venezuela deepened further throughout 2025. X, Signal, YouTube, TikTok and Telegram remain restricted, although sometimes intermittently.
At least 61 independent media outlets remain blocked, prompting the group to develop its own censorship-resistant news reading app.
Venezuelan authorities have also been targeting VPN use and blocked more than 20 VPN websites in January 2025. However, experts at Ve Sin Filtro confirm that most VPNs continue to function despite the outages.
Earlier this month, Proton VPN saw a 12,500% increase in registrations in the country following the capture of President Maduro.
If you are in Venezuela and are having difficulty using your VPN, we recommend switching to obfuscated VPN protocols in your app settings. They are designed to better evade blocks by disguising your VPN traffic as normal HTTPS traffic.
