- Apple Notes could receive a Google Gemini-powered update in iOS 26.4
- This will potentially allow you to create notes based on content from other apps.
- This could fulfill a promise Apple made in the summer of 2024
Despite being outperformed by many of the best note-taking apps, Apple’s Notes app is never far from my side when I’m on my iPhone. There’s something about its low-friction simplicity that makes it my go-to place to organize my thoughts, manage my shopping list, plan ahead, and so much more. And now, it looks like it could become even more essential thanks to a key update that’s reportedly coming in iOS 26.4, all thanks to Apple’s recent partnership with Google Gemini.
According to The Information, the Notes app will receive a significant improvement in iOS 26.4 thanks to the addition of some artificial intelligence (AI) that will link the Siri virtual assistant with Google’s Gemini AI.
Specifically, The Information says that “Siri can also take care of other types of tasks, such as creating a Notes document with a cooking recipe or information about the main causes of drug addiction, for example.”
Honestly, that line about relating it to your favorite recipes has me intrigued. When we first glimpsed Apple Intelligence in June 2024, Apple promised that we could have Siri take things from one app and use them in another.
Reading The Information’s report, I imagine people might search for a recipe in Safari and then say something like, “Siri, add these ingredients to my shopping list note.” Think about how much time you could save by repeatedly copying and pasting text from one place to another.
Finally keeping his promise
And of course, you shouldn’t just reload your cookbook. You could potentially ask Siri to send an image from the Photos app to a specific person in Messages. Or grab an address from an email and get directions there in Apple Maps.
Working with apps like this was one of the key promises Apple made in 2024, and now it looks like the company might finally deliver on that promise, even if it means backtracking on its ambitions and enlisting Google’s help.
Apple has added many useful features to Notes in recent years. I love that the app can scan documents, correct their colors, and crop them appropriately with minimal effort on my part. And being able to transcribe my audio notes automatically in the app is a great tool.
But with Gemini-powered AI taking over, the app could finally get closer to what Apple promised us almost two years ago. It’s clear why Apple chose Gemini and I hope it’s worth the wait.
