There’s a sense of inevitability surrounding the Bills and Josh Allen in particular this postseason, but the odds will be stacked against them on Saturday. As the AFC’s No. 1 seed, the Broncos come off a well-rested bye (while the Bills play a short week), were 8-1 at their high-altitude home this season, and their defense is among the most fearsome in the NFL.
Denver’s defense racked up 68 sacks during the regular season, the fifth-highest total in NFL history, while limiting opposing quarterbacks to a 57.8% completion rate and 5.4 yards per attempt average. Allen, of course, isn’t just any QB, but this is a limited Buffalo group that can’t stop the run and really has no weapons to take the load off of Allen.
Unfortunately for Sean Payton, the Broncos’ rushing offense has been sluggish all year. That means that even if the defense is able to get to Allen, who suffered finger, knee and foot injuries last weekend, they will almost certainly need Bo Nix to produce the goods.
On his day, the second-year quarterback can be a winner, but Sean McDermott handled him with brutal efficiency the last time these teams met. Nix had 64 yards and a score in the first quarter of their Wild Card Round meeting a year ago, but was shut out for the rest of the game.
