KARACHI:

Police launched an investigation after transgender activist Bindiya Rana narrowly escaped an attack at her Karachi home in the early hours of Monday, highlighting growing concerns about community safety in the metropolis.

The first information report (FIR) of the incident was filed following his complaint at Baloch Colony Police Station under sections 34 (common intention) and 324 (attempt to murder) of the Pakistan Penal Code.

According to the FIR, the incident took place around 2am when two unidentified armed suspects rang the doorbell of the activist’s residence and started shooting when it opened.

He said Rana and fellow transrights Zehrish Soomro, councilor of the City Municipal Committee-Safoora-PPP, were at home at the time.

Soomro told him The express PAkGazette that the attackers tried to force their way into the house, prompting Rana to try to protect herself. He said Rana reportedly fell during the attack while the attackers fled the scene.

Soomro called the incident part of a worrying trend of attacks against transgender people in Karachi. Rana has asked the authorities to ensure security measures in the area, especially for the transgender community.

It should be remembered that in recent years, the transgender community has reported incidents of threats, harassment and violent attacks, including targeted killings.

In September 2025, bullet-riddled bodies of three transgender people were found dumped in Karachi’s Memon Goth area near the highway, sparking widespread shock and condemnation.
