NBA Rumors: Warriors GM Responds to Jonathan Kuminga Trade Demand

While reports indicate that Golden State Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga wants to be traded, his general manager had other things to say on the matter.

And he did it with a subtle blow.

Kuminga has been on the trade block for quite some time in Golden State, but became more prevalent when he signed a two-year deal in restricted free agency designed to be added in a trade.

However, since he fell out of the Warriors’ regular rotation on game nights, he reportedly “demanded” a trade from the team.

He had this to say when a reporter asked him about it Tuesday night.

“I’m aware of that,” general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. said of the reports. “In terms of demands, when a demand is made, there needs to be demand in the market.”

Dunleavy is hinting that while Kuminga wants to be moved, there hasn’t been a mutual demand from other teams.

“We’ll see how that plays out. But, listen. I always tell these guys that I’m willing to work with them, I want to help people, whether it’s JK or any player on our roster. So, we’re fine, if that’s what they want, trying to figure it out. But we have to do what’s best for our organization, and that’s what we do.”

The NBA trade deadline is quickly approaching as it is set for February 5 at 3 pm ET.

Kuminga could be moved by then, but Dunleavy now has to think about how to improve his roster after All-Star Jimmy Butler’s season-ending ACL injury. If the Warriors still want to challenge for another NBA title for their trophy case, Dunleavy could be moving to fill that void.

With Butler out, Kuminga returned to the fold on Tuesday and did his best with 20 points in 21 minutes off the bench against the Toronto Raptors. Toronto achieved the victory, 145-127, over Golden State.

Considering all of this, Dunleavy and the front office will need to discuss whether they will be buyers or sellers at the deadline. And maybe Kuminga will get more playing time in the future with Butler sidelined.

Either way, it doesn’t look like the Warriors GM is moving hastily to grant Kuminga’s request.
