Nintendo has released a surprise free update for Donkey Kong Country returns HD which adds new content and improves the experience for players on both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2.
The most significant novelty is the arrival of Dixie Kong, whose character can accompany you in certain levels instead of Diddy Kong. It offers its signature helicopter spin ability that allows you to gain a little more height.
A new Turbo Attack mode has also been added, which takes the existing time trial mode and ups the ante by greatly increasing the speed at which the game runs.
Nintendo Switch 2 owners can expect higher resolution and much shorter loading times; the latter is one of my biggest frustrations with the original release. GameShare support has also been implemented, allowing you to play the game’s co-op mode with a friend over local wireless connectivity.
Even if you don’t have a Nintendo Switch 2, you can expect some subtle graphical improvements. As detailed in a video on the CVG YouTube channel, small issues such as overlapping asset locations and missing effects have been fixed.
Co-op mode also received a much-needed fix that allows you and your partner to bounce off the same enemy more easily.
