AI-generated music is quite the topic of discussion right now, especially now that more and more users are apparently stumbling across AI music on Spotify. One of those artists, who has managed to accumulate millions of views, has listeners convinced that she is all AI.
Neo-soul ‘singer’ Sienna Rose has burst onto the scene, earning herself a staggering 3.6 million monthly listeners on Spotify and three spots on Spotify’s Viral Top 50. Despite this booming success, I hate to tell you, she probably isn’t real at all.
There are many reasons why people believe that their music and personality is a product of AI, but music streaming service Deezer has put it in black and white by marking all of its content as AI-generated content. We reached out to Deezer for comment, who stated the following:
“We can confirm that the majority of Sienna Rose albums on Deezer are clearly detected and labeled as AI-generated using our AI detection tool. As AI music becomes more widespread, we believe it’s vitally important to be transparent with listeners and fair with artists, which is why Deezer removes all fully AI-generated tracks from algorithmic recommendations and editorial playlists, so users can make informed decisions about what they’re listening to.”
It’s usually pretty easy to spot what music is generated by AI on streaming services (release dates and album covers are often big clues), but Sienna Rose is an interesting case. At first glance, her music sounds, well, convincing, and she managed to fool high-profile celebrities, including Selena Gomez, who used one of Rose’s songs in a post that was later deleted.
You can’t ignore the signs
Beyond Deezer’s AI music labels, there’s a lot more to Rose’s musical persona that simply screams “AI,” with her sound being a big indicator that she’s adopted from artists like Alicia Keys, Norah Jones, and even Olivia Dean.
In addition to the influx of music he has released (he released over 45 songs between September 28 and December 5 according to the BBC), listeners have been quick to point out the “generic” sound of his songs, reporting bland lyrical choices, inconsistent beats, and a “telltale hiss” in several of his songs, all of which are common tropes found within AI-generated music.
Then there is his lack of social media presence. When it comes to AI artists, another clue is social media, where Rose is largely absent, but recent videos have surfaced from accounts claiming to be her, like the TikTok video below, which currently has 2.3 million views.
It seems relatively normal, right? But there are some things that just don’t add up.
What I can’t get over is the follower count (3,867 on TikTok as of this writing), because surely if you were an artist surpassing popular artists like Djo, A$AP Rocky, and PinkPantheress on the Spotify charts, you’d be amassing a rapidly growing online following. It seems like someone is being very cautious.
But there is a video (see below) on Sienna Rose’s Instagram account that is the icing on the cake to the theory that her entire existence is generated by AI. The video, which shows Rose appearing on a podcast that turns out to have no name, social hashtags, and an unrecognizable host with blank expressions and wandering eyes.
The theories pointed in two different directions. Some believed that Rose was a legitimate person who simply used AI to create music, but more people were convinced that her entire existence was a product of AI itself. After listening to her music and watching every video I could find of her, I side with the latter, and now we have confirmation from Deezer that makes that clear.
