- ExpressVPN is rolling out major updates to all of its apps
- Includes performance improvements and post-quantum protection.
- Older versions of the app will stop working after March 31
ExpressVPN just set an important deadline for its users. No matter the platform, you must update the app by March 31, 2026 or you will lose VPN protection.
This push to upgrade is because ExpressVPN retired older security certificates. This means that legacy applications will no longer be able to authenticate or connect to the VPN service.
ExpressVPN is one of the best VPN services out there and these updates are necessary for users to stay protected. Fortunately, updating your app is easy, regardless of the platform.
If you have automatic updates enabled, this probably won’t affect you, but given the consequences of not running a VPN, you might want to check that you’re already running the latest version anyway.
All legacy ExpressVPN apps will go offline at the end of March
In a blog post, ExpressVPN explained that it will be retiring older security certificates. Without a working certificate, your ExpressVPN app will no longer be able to connect to a VPN server.
This will not affect Internet connectivity. You’ll still be able to connect, but without the added protection of a VPN client. This means that your IP address will be visible to your Internet Service Provider (ISP) and to various websites and applications. You may also be more vulnerable to potential threats.
Most devices will need updates. Linux users will have to switch to the GUI-based client as part of this.
The update does not offer new features to users, but it does add an extra layer of security by updating older certificates with new and improved ones. Credentials now support ExpressVPN’s latest post-quantum security features, making you future-proof.
The change in certification follows other recent updates, including a major Qt performance update, an increase in connection speeds, and a major mobile app redesign in May 2025.
How to update ExpressVPN or check the existing version of your app
The update is free on all ExpressVPN apps. To ensure you stay protected, you should update to the latest version of your respective app, as described below.
