Government and PTI refute reports on ‘final offer’ to PTI as ‘fake news’

The federal government and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Friday categorically rejected the report of an alleged offer made to the party to reconstitute the Election Commission of Pakistan to ensure smooth functioning of democracy.

The categorical allegations came to light after journalist Mohammad Mallick claimed in his show ‘Khabar Muhammad Malick Kay Saath’ a day ago that a “firm and final” offer was made to the PTI to help make democracy functional in the country.

According to Mallick, two decisions were taken at the “highest level” and conveyed to the party, allegedly including the PTI’s return to parliament and committees, participation in parliamentary procedures and giving “a form of functional democracy” in exchange for a promise that the ECP would be reconstituted and laws amended so that the next elections would be free and fair. Furthermore, the government was willing to hold elections a year ahead of schedule, Mallick said.

However, both the government and PTI leaders rejected the claims as incorrect. In a post on X, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar called the reports “absolutely false.”

He added: “I don’t know how these stories are made up every few days. Totally refuted.”

Furthermore, the Minister of State for Law and Justice, Barrister Aqeel, also supported his cabinet colleague’s statement.

“This is absolutely ‘fake news’ – no such offer has been made! I urge you to check back with any ‘sources’ from whom you may claim to have obtained this false information.”

He further wrote: “The only offer made so far has been that of ‘talks’ between political parties and nothing more, without conditions and/or preconditions. Therefore, we must refrain from saying things that are not correct.”

Meanwhile, PTI Chairman Advocate Gohar Ali Khan also rejected any suggestion of a government offer during a press conference at Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa House, calling it a false narrative.

“Yesterday it was said that the government had made us an offer that elections would be held after two years and that we should accept these terms, otherwise not. This is completely false, nothing like that has happened. These are all rumours,” he said.
