Adobe has reversed its decision to discontinue its popular Animate platform following widespread community uproar.
Less than 24 hours after announcing the move, Adobe Creative Cloud senior director of community and design marketing Mike Chambers admitted in a Reddit post that the company did not “comply.” [its] standards” and “caused much confusion and distress within the community.
What has now become clear is that Animate is still being deprioritised, but will instead go into so-called “maintenance mode” rather than disappear completely at this point.
After all, Adobe Animate won’t be discontinued
Chambers said Animate is already in maintenance mode (so not entering), meaning it will continue to get security and bug fixes.
“Animate will continue to be available to new and existing users. This is a change from what we communicated yesterday in the email about the status of Adobe Animate, its schedule and availability,” Chambers emphasized.
Maintenance mode is Adobe’s language for cutting support for new features, but the app will still receive all the usual customer support and security updates to keep it operational for years to come.
In response to community uproar following earlier announcements that Adobe Animate was being discontinued, Chambers promised to “take steps to ensure that the community continues to have long-term access to its content.”
While this is certainly good news for Animate users and a red flag for Adobe as it proactively responds to customer feedback, some are still unhappy. One Reddit user questioned the subscription model behind Animate, suggesting that it should become a perpetual license now that new features are no longer being added.
