- AMD GPUs Rumored to Get More Price Hikes
- This follows price increases that were apparently implemented last month.
- A separate statement is that AMD will also focus more on 8GB graphics cards than 16GB models.
GPU rumors are once again talking about AMD’s plans for its Radeon graphics cards, which apparently include another price increase and a production strategy adjustment to favor 8GB products.
VideoCardz reports that these two rumors come from different sources, but they were both broadcast via Board Channels in China, which is a source of supply chain speculation in Asia.
Firstly, let’s look at the talk of price increases, where it is stated that either later this month or in March, some AMD graphics card manufacturers may increase the cost of their products, following a 5% to 10% increase that occurred in January.
The extent of the increase this time is unknown, but it is expected to bring these Radeon GPUs in line with the price of comparable Nvidia models.
The second source raises the idea that AMD is going to modify its Radeon graphics card production levels to more favor 8GB models, but that any adjustment will be more of an adjustment than a big change to the assembly lines.
The additional claim is that this new strategy will make two 8GB GPUs stand out more at higher production levels: the 8GB RX 9060 XT (there is also a 16GB model of this card) and the RX 7650 GRE.
Analysis: 8GB priority makes a lot of sense for both AMD and Nvidia
In case you’re wondering what the RX 7650 GRE is, this is an Asia-only GPU from AMD, so you can’t get it at retail stores elsewhere (although you can ship it from Hong Kong or similar via a third-party marketplace seller, but I wouldn’t recommend that for a number of reasons, including returns and customer service for starters). It’s essentially a slightly faster version of the RX 7600, although there isn’t much difference.
As mentioned, there are two versions of the RX 9060
There’s long been a debate about whether 8GB of VRAM is enough for modern games, and I won’t go into that again here, but there’s certainly a lot of skepticism about this, and more to the point for me, the level of future-proofing you’re getting with this amount of video memory.
Of course, since the RAM price crisis also affects video memory, it makes sense that AMD could pursue a course that shifts priorities away from more (relatively) affordable VRAM-hoarding GPUs like the 16GB RX 9060 XT. Nvidia is rumored to be doing the same, especially with the RTX 5060 Ti, which also has 8GB and 16GB twists.
As for rumored price increases, AMD GPUs are already increasing in that regard, which may reflect the aforementioned previous price increases (rumored to date back some time) to some extent. Team Red has even admitted that sales prices may not “remain stable” on all of its GPUs as we move towards 2026.
If we look at the 16GB RX 9060 While it was good value at that launch price, it doesn’t look that smart currently.
Interestingly, the RTX 5060 Ti 16GB, which is faster than the 9060 XT 16GB but not by much (aside from ray tracing), has maintained the same price difference with the AMD GPU compared to their respective launch prices. They are now $80 apart (for the cheapest models on Newegg), and those recommended prices were also $80 apart. This seems to support the idea that AMD Radeon prices will follow Nvidia’s margins, which again makes sense.
We may see GPU prices rise even further in the coming months, as predicted by board channels, but that’s not a surprise given the RAM crisis, which, despite some signs that it is currently stabilizing, is still expected to worsen during this first quarter of 2026.
If you’re thinking about purchasing one of these more affordable 16GB GPUs, now is probably the time to do it. Either that, or be prepared to wait out the crisis, which could last this year and next, or at least that is what some analysts predict.
