Maryland Democrats Hang Sign Dismissing Concerns About Trans Sports, Post Shows

The Maryland Freedom Caucus, a group of Republican delegates in the Maryland state legislature, made a social media post showing a sign that appeared to have been hung by Democratic colleagues, dismissing concerns about trans athletes in women’s sports.

The post claimed the poster was hung on Wednesday, National Women and Girls in Sports Day.

The sign, which bears the signature of the Maryland LGBTQ+ Legislative Caucus, was hung in the offices of Democratic state delegates Eric Ebersole and Nick Allen.

The sign baselessly notes that “trans women have no competitive advantage” in women’s sports. In 2021, the British Journal of Sports Medicine published a study that said transgender women maintain an advantage over biological women even after a year of hormone therapy treatment.

The poster also said that “anti-dignity policies put transgender youth at risk,” “banning transgender youth is illegal,” and “invasive enforcement creates fear.”

The post and apparent sign come a day before the Maryland state legislature votes on the Fairness in Women’s Sports Act.

The bill would require “certain interscholastic and intramural junior varsity and varsity athletic teams or sports sponsored by certain schools and certain locker rooms to be expressly designated on the basis of biological sex; prohibiting certain entities from taking certain adverse actions against a school for maintaining separate interscholastic and intramural junior varsity and varsity athletic teams or locker rooms for female students.”

So far, 27 US states have similar laws in place imposing bans on trans athletes in women’s sports.
