- The US military has access to the full power of ChatGPT
- You can use the AI chatbot for “all legal uses”
- ChatGPT will be hosted on government cloud infrastructure
OpenAI agreed to provide ChatGPT to the US military after months of internal deliberations, marking a major development for the OpenAI platform for the government launched in July 2025.
Instead of accessing the consumer-facing ChatGPT interface, the chatbot will be available through GenAI.mil, the Pentagon’s secure AI platform, because the military version of ChatGPT will be slightly different from the others.
Safeguards are built in at the model level, but the Pentagon’s ChatGPT will be available for “all legal uses,” meaning it should not be technically restricted.
The US military gets its own ChatGPT
“We believe that the people responsible for defending the country should have access to the best tools available,” OpenAI wrote. “AI can help protect people, deter adversaries and prevent future conflicts.”
Although the initial launch is only for the US military, OpenAI hinted at broader support for more governments in the future: “Our goal is to help governments use AI effectively and safely.”
In its first version, exclusive to the United States, ChatGPT will be slightly modified to handle the department’s unclassified work, running on the government’s cloud infrastructure.
Aside from the obvious security measures, the military version of ChatGPT can be used for all the usual reasons, such as summarizing, analyzing, writing papers, generating reports, and more.
OpenAI was not guaranteed the contract, as rival companies Google and xAI were also in play, having agreed to the “all legal uses” clause. Anthropic had reportedly backed off, wanting more control over how Claude could be used.
In fact, it could be that Google and xAI tools will be adopted within GenAI.mil or more broadly across the Pentagon in other ways.
