The Dutch telecommunications company Odido has confirmed having suffered a cyber attack and having lost sensitive data of millions of people.
In a notice posted on its website, the company says it “deeply regrets” the situation and is “fully committed” to limiting its impact.
“According to the investigation, the incident concerns personal data from a customer contact system used by Odido,” reads the notice, automatically translated. “There are no passwords, calling information or billing information involved.”
Telecommunications companies are a main target
The company also said its services remain uninterrupted and unauthorized access was terminated as soon as possible. External cybersecurity experts were called in to assist and affected customers were notified.
The notice says nothing about the identity of the attackers, the nature of the incident or the number of people affected; However, speaking to local media, the company said that 6.2 million customers were affected and they lost a combination of the following:
full name
Address and place of residence
Mobile phone number
Customer number
Email address
IBAN (account number)
Birthdate
Identification data (passport or driving license number and validity)
The incident, which apparently took place on February 7, 2026, did not compromise passwords, call logs, location data, invoice details or ID scans.
Odido is a leading Dutch telecommunications provider offering mobile, fiber broadband and television services to both consumers and businesses. It operates nationwide fiber and 5G networks and operates brands such as Ben, Simpel and Tele2 Thuis. The telecommunications company serves around eight million customers and employs more than 2,000 people, and in 2024 generated approximately €2.3 billion in revenue (around $2.5 billion).
Due to the nature of the data they generate, telecommunications companies are often prime targets, especially for state-sponsored threat actors. So far, no group has claimed responsibility for this attack and the data has yet to appear on the dark web.
