Former Pakistan captain and noted batsman Babar Azam has shared his thoughts ahead of the much-awaited clash with India in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, scheduled for Sunday at the R Premadasa Stadium.
In an interview with ESPNcricinfoBabar spoke about the unparalleled intensity and global attention that a clash between Pakistan and India invariably attracts.
He emphasized the pressure that these matches bring, not only from the fans, but also from the responsibility of representing the nation on a massive stage.
“As you said, a match between Pakistan and India is always high intensity. Everyone and fans are involved. Even with so many people watching, it plays out at different levels and expectations naturally rise,” Babar said.
Drawing on his own experience, the 31-year-old stressed the importance of maintaining composure and managing expectations.
Babar highlighted how staying calm and not getting distracted by outside opinions can make a crucial difference, especially for younger players going through the hustle and bustle of high-profile fixtures.
“I have participated in many matches and we have learned that the more calm, relaxed and we do not listen to what people say, the better it is. Young people often get excited and talk about it, but if you stay calm and without tension, it always works in your favor,” he added.
It is pertinent to mention that both teams remain undefeated in the group stage so far. Pakistan has recorded victories over the Netherlands and the United States, while India has defeated the United States and Namibia.
Historically, India and Pakistan have met 16 times in international T20 tournaments, with India winning 13 and Pakistan three.
In T20 World Cup encounters, the two sides have met eight times, with India leading 6-1 and one match ending in a draw.
