The pairs free skate is the penultimate figure skating gold medal event at the 2026 Winter Olympics, and after world champions and favorites Miura Riku and Kihara Ryuichi faltered in last night’s short program, we’re potentially in for another upset.
However, all is not lost. The Japanese duo are fifth in the standings with 73.11 heading into the final, 6.9 points behind leaders Minerva Fabienne Hase and Nikita Volodin of Germany. The Olympic debutants, who took silver at the world championships, set a personal best of 80.01, comfortably ahead of European champions Anastasiia Metelkina and Luka Berulava, who are within striking distance of Georgia’s first silver medal at a Winter Olympics.
Canadians Lia Pereira and Trennt Michaud are currently in the bronze position, 0.73 points ahead of Hungarians Maria Pavlova and Alexei Sviatchenko.
The top 16 pairs will perform their free skate routines in reverse order, with Hase and Volodin in last place. Each routine should not exceed four minutes and must include a trio of partner lifts, including a twist lift, two different throw jumps, a solo jump, a jump combination or sequence, a partner twist combination, a death spiral, and a choreographic sequence.
It is these technical components that distinguish pairs skating from ice dancing. If you’ve caught the figure skating bug and fancy a deeper dive before the end of pairs figure skating and the upcoming women’s singles tournament, Netflix’s three-part documentary series Glitter and gold: dancing on ice has you covered.
