Recently, I’ve been having a big problem with Spotify: the algorithmically generated playlists insist on placing random pop artists on my completely non-pop playlists. Sorry Spotify, but Chappell Roan and Olivia Dean are not 90s folk rock.
So, is Deezer coming to the rescue?
The French music streaming service (a French subscription platform, not just for Guetta and Daft Punk) is rolling out an update to its Flow Tuner feature, which creates a personalized playlist based on your listening.
Now, you can push Flow Tuner in the right direction, which should help you adjust the playlist generator in the right direction. The key is that you can now turn off certain genres or subgenres, prohibiting Flow from adding them to the playlist, and you can turn them back on later, if you decide your metal embargo is over.
You can also add genres you haven’t heard before, if you want to discover something new. The Flow playlist will reflect your changes immediately.
Another step on the road
Many streaming services give you the illusion of power over your algorithmically created playlists. Apple Music lets you opt out of songs you’d like to listen to less often, but what is this actually? does With that information nobody knows. Spotify allows you to exclude songs from your ‘taste profile’, although that seems to remove only one song, and only from ‘made for you’ lists.
Deezer’s Flow Tuner, then, gives you much more control over the playlists they give you. If you like using these features to discover new music, it’ll be a lovely little change and will prevent Roan or Dean from being lumped in with ’90s rock.
Using this feature is easy: when you create a Flow, the app will automatically ask you which genres to include (or not). The tool seems to have quite a few subgenres, so you should be able to modify the playlist to your liking despite how vague the genre labels can be.
We rate Deezer as the best music streaming service in terms of features, with quizzes, collaborative playlist creation tools, and music recognition tools you don’t get on its rivals. This new change to Flow Tuner appears to be just the next step of many to make the algorithmically generated playlist tool world-class.
Case in point? AI-generated tracks are prohibited in Flow Tuner and are automatically excluded by Deezer tools. Less slope, more rock? Easily the most tempting reason to switch Spotify that I’ve heard in a while…
