- The use of AI has become a promotion metric for Accenture
- Older workers reluctant to adopt, non-users previously warned of inappropriateness
- Decision raises questions about who creates content at Accenture
Accenture is now said to be monitoring employees’ AI use to link promotion eligibility to “regular adoption” of internal AI tools, according to Financial times information.
Weekly logins for Accenture’s AI tools are being linked to some of its senior workers. These will be visible factors in the company’s summer promotion decisions.
This comes as senior staff appear to be more reluctant to adopt AI compared to younger staff, and workers are clearly unhappy with the changes.
Some employees have already called the tools ineffective “broken waste generators,” and one worker even threatened to “quit immediately” if he was directly affected.
“Use of our key tools will be a visible contribution to talent discussions,” an email seen by the Financial times read.
However, not all workers appear to be affected to the same extent. Accenture employees in 12 European countries will be exempt, and those in the U.S. federal government’s contracts division will also be free from the new metric.
Although the application may seem extreme, CEO Julie Sweet had previously warned that staff who cannot adapt to AI may no longer be suitable for the company.
And the company isn’t in the best situation right now: share prices have fallen about 42% over the past year. The most recent quarterly revenue growth was 5%, and full-year growth is forecast for a modest 3-5% increase.
“Our strategy is to be the reinvention partner of choice for our customers and to be the best, most customer-centric and AI-enabled place to work,” the company said, referring to the need to adopt “the latest tools and technologies.”
