Norwegian cross-country skier Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo stood out from all the other Winter Olympians who preceded him on Saturday during the Milan Cortina Games.
Klaebo won his sixth gold medal of the Games, this time in the 50 kilometer mass start. He set the record for the most gold medals won by an athlete in a single Winter Olympic Games. He breaks a record set by American speed skater Eric Heiden, who won five golds at the 1980 Lake Placid Olympics.

Heiden still holds the individual record, as two of Klaebo’s victories came in team events.
Klaebo’s teammates Marin Loewstroem Nyenget and Emil Iversen took silver and bronze respectively. The Norwegian trio took an early lead and then continued to open the gap on their pursuers.
Klaebo took the lead as they reached the last hill. He didn’t look back from there.

The victory gave Norway a record 18th gold medal and further increased its lead in the total medal count at these Olympic Games to 40 in total.
