- A spoiler protection feature is in the works for WhatsApp
- It has now been spotted in beta for iOS and Android.
- A similar feature already exists in Reddit threads.
WhatsApp is known for releasing new updates at a steady pace, and there’s a feature in the works that could help you avoid spoilers from friends and family about the big shows of the moment.
As discovered by WABetaInfo (via 9to5Mac), the latest beta version of WhatsApp for iOS comes with a spoiler formatting option, meaning that text would not be revealed to recipients until it has been specifically tapped in a message.
It would work similarly to the spoiler formatting option currently available on Reddit: when you open a post, the spoiler text is hidden, and then you have to click on it to see the message below.
This would mean that you could continue chatting with your contacts without worrying about seeing information about the latest Bridgerton or Industry plot twists. The same feature has already appeared in the beta versions of WhatsApp for Android.
Coming soon
The new feature, assuming it eventually rolls out, would be particularly useful in group chats, where some participants might be up to date with the latest happenings on top shows on streaming platforms and others might not.
It’s unclear how long it will take for this spoiler protection feature to move out of beta and into the official app, but it’s an update that makes a lot of sense and should end up being widely used in WhatsApp conversations.
At the moment, spoiler tags cannot be applied to images and videos, but the WABetaInfo team speculates that this could also happen eventually, meaning you’d be even better protected from reveals you don’t want to see.
Just yesterday, WhatsApp began rolling out another update to group chats, allowing newcomers to these conversations to view a select portion of the group’s history, preventing the same information from being reposted over and over again.
