Mia Manganello becomes the oldest American woman to win a medal in speed skating

American speed skater Mia Manganello earned the United States’ first individual long track medal at the 2026 Milan Cortina Games by winning bronze.

The 36-year-old comes after Canada’s Ivanie Blondin, who won silver, and the Netherlands’ Marijke Groenewoud, who took gold.

The medal marks Manganello’s first individual Olympic podium after three appearances at the Games.

While speaking to reporters, Manganello said emotionally: “This is the perfect ending. I have dreamed of this moment.”

Manganellos’ victory also gives the American women their first medal in speed skating at these Games after a series of failures.

Previously, American skaters had finished fourth in the 1,000 meters, 1,500 meters and team pursuit, as well as fifth in the 500 meters.

The Netherlands swept the mass start races, with Jorrit Bergsma taking home gold in the men’s event on Saturday.

At 40 years old, Bergsma surprised the competition with a bold move in the third round, taking home his second Olympic gold medal.

The Netherlands finished the Milan Cortina Games with five gold medals in speed skating, the most of any country.

For Manganello, the bronze medal is the fourth medal for the United States in long track, the most the country has won in the Games.
