Dyson is spoiling us. Towards the end of last year, the brand launched a new ultra-compact vacuum cleaner, the PencilVac, and a new agile hard floor cleaner, the Clean+Wash Hygiene. Now the best features of both cleaners are combined to create Dyson PencilWash.
This new hard floor cleaner has the streamlined construction and downsized motor of the PencilVac, and takes its mopping cues from the efficient Clean+Wash Hygiene. Here’s a rundown of the coolest features of this innovative new cleaner…
1. It’s so compact
The elephant (baby) in the room is the same size. Many of today’s best wet-dry vacuums are chunky and heavy, but the PencilWash is almost unbelievably svelte. It uses a tiny motor, which is small enough to fit inside the 1.5-inch/38mm handle. The battery is equally compact and clips together to form the top section of the handle. The water tanks are then integrated into the floor header.
That means the entire unit is not much larger than a normal-sized broom. It is also lightweight, weighing 4.9 lbs/2.2 kg. Now, designing the water tanks to fit in the floor head means they’re quite small, but thanks to some meticulous water distribution, Dyson says they should be able to clean up to 100 square meters per tank.
2. There is no filter
The knock-on effect of placing the wastewater tank inside the soil header is that the dirty liquid hardly needs to travel. As a result, there is no risk of any tubes becoming blocked or starting to emit unpleasant odours. In fact, Dyson boasts that there is no filter here.
3. It is extremely maneuverable
In addition to sporting a streamlined design, the PencilWash is designed to be maneuverable. This is one area where Dyson excels: most of the current best Dyson vacuums are ultra-maneuverable. This one also has the advantage of that broom-shaped handle, which means there’s no bulk around the top section either.
Dyson says the PencilWash will spin smoothly with just a twist of your wrist, and based on my experience with the PencilVac, I can believe it. It can also fall almost flat (170 degrees), in which mode it is only 5.9 inches/15 cm high and can easily slide under low furniture.
The Dyson PencilWash goes on sale in the US on March 17 and the UK on February 23, with a list price of $349/£299.99. (Availability and pricing in Australia to be confirmed). Full review below.
